Check How Nigerians Celebrated Independence Day In 1960

Nigeria was conceded freedom from the British Empire on October 1, 1960. Of course there were heaps of festivities around the nation particularly in the then capital, Lagos.  

The festivals were topped by a great service facilitated by the PM, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. At the time, Nnamdi Azikiwe was representative general, a part imparted to Sir James Wilson Robertson. Queeen Elizabeth II, who was still the nation's sovereign, was spoken to by an individual from the British imperial family, Princess Alexandra.

There were firecrackers, move troupes performing indigenous moves, masquerades and a state dinner where dignitaries blended and moved.
